If you're an anesthesia provider, you will find information about the number one health hazard facing the anesthesia professional...chemical dependency. If this is news to you, you're in good company. There is a "conspiracy of silence" in our profession, and people are dying because of it. This disease causes enough problems without health care professionals turning a blind eye to their colleagues. Unfortunately, it happens everyday. It's sad to say, but the prevaling attitude is , "shut up and go away" when it comes to anyone struggling with this chronic, progressive, fatal-if-not-treated-disease. That's because there is an overwhelming lack of knowledge about this disease, both by society and by health care providers. That's the purpose of this web site...to provide information regarding the disease of addiction and how to recognize it. The earlier it's recognized, the sooner treatment can start and the better the chance for long term recovery. There is hope! You are NOT alone. |

Addiction is the number one public health problem in this country. It is estimated that over 25 million people aged 12 and up are addicted to some drug, whether it's tobacco, alcohol, cocaine, methamphetamine, or prescription medications. Children are the fastest rising group of abusers, using inhalants (spray paint other aerosols), over the counter medication used for colds or allergies, parent or grandparent prescription medications, alcohol, as well as illegal drugs. Despite the growing body of knowledge regarding how drug abuse can alter the chemical and physical structure of the brain, people still react emotionally when the topic is brought up. We're talking health care professionals as well! To continue to deal with this disease based on myth, misbelief, and misinformation leads to destruction of families, businesses, and the fabric of our culture. It also kills people, young and old, educated and uneducated. Until we change our current paradigm, that addiction is a moral failing and lack of willpower, this problem will continue to grow. |
I would like to express my gratitude to all who took the time to respond to my story in Jeff Keller's excellent newsletter. If I could, I would hug each and every one of you! Your compassion, empathy, and acceptance of a stranger is humbling to say the least. Please know your words of kindness, encouragement and love are posted near my computer and my drawing table where they will serve as inspiration for both my art, and my daily task of carrying the message of recovery to the addict who still suffers! Special thanks to Jeff, for your encouragement and willingness to respond to a stranger with acceptance, kindness, encouragement, and friendship. Jack |
